Divorce & Separation
Clear, calm support – because divorce is much more than a legal process.
Sorting out a break-up can feel overwhelming. We help you weigh up all your options and support you to find the simplest and most effective way forward.
SPEAK TO OUR FAMILY TEAM
Tell us a little about your circumstances, and we’ll be in touch to discuss your options and help you find the best way forward. All enquiries are confidential.
As a legal process, divorce is relatively simple. It becomes complicated once you have to work out who gets what in terms of finances, pensions, property, businesses, and in many cases, children. That’s where we can come in.
Our starting point is always to look for a way to settle matters quickly and amicably – because that’s how we can save you time and money as well as emotional strain. If that’s not possible, we can guide you through mediation, arbitration or court proceedings to help you get a fair outcome. We even have our own accredited mediation and child mediation specialists. Something that always gives us a head start.
Our team of family lawyers has extensive experience in resolving cases – even if they’re highly complex, across many jurisdictions, or with significant wealth at stake. If your relationship is breaking down, talk to us sooner rather than later. An initial consultation doesn’t commit you to a legal process. It simply gives you clear, confident advice, so you can start talking and move forward from a position of strength.

CONFIDENCE IN EVERY STEP

02
DIVORCE APPLICATION
The divorce application is prepared and submitted to the court. If you apply on your own, it is then sent to your spouse, who will normally be asked to acknowledge receipt.
03
CONDITIONAL ORDER
Once the required 20-week period has passed, you can apply for a conditional order. This confirms that the court sees no legal reason why the divorce cannot proceed.
04
FINAL ORDER
At least six weeks and one day after the conditional order, you can apply for the final order. Once granted, the marriage is legally ended.
FAQs
A straightforward divorce will usually take at least six to seven months from the application being issued. This is because there is a minimum 20-week period before you can apply for a Conditional Order, followed by a further six weeks and one day before you can apply for the Final Order. More complex matters can take longer, particularly where finances or arrangements for children also need to be resolved.
You can apply for a divorce yourself, but having a solicitor can help you understand the wider implications of ending your marriage. This is particularly important where there are finances, property, pensions, businesses or children to consider. We can guide you through the process and help make sure important issues are not overlooked.
The divorce itself does not automatically decide what happens to your finances. Your home, savings, pensions, investments and other assets may all need to be considered as part of a separate financial settlement. The right outcome will depend on your individual circumstances, including your needs, income and the needs of any children.
Arrangements for children are usually dealt with separately from the divorce itself. Wherever possible, parents are encouraged to agree arrangements between themselves, sometimes with the help of mediation or legal advice. If an agreement cannot be reached, the court can make decisions based on what is in the child’s best interests.
The cost will depend on your circumstances and the level of legal support you need. There is a court fee for making the divorce application, alongside any solicitor’s fees. Costs can increase where advice is also needed about finances, property or arrangements for children. We will explain the likely costs clearly at the outset and keep you updated as your case progresses.
Every separation is different. Our experienced Family team will help you understand your options, make informed decisions and move forward with confidence.
