SA Law golf day raises £1,600 for Watford FC Community Sports Education Trust

Mon 11th Jul 2016

Eight four-balls took to the fairways of Porters Park Golf Club in Radlett on July 1 for the SA Law Charity Golf Day. The friendly but highly competitive event raised £1,600 for the Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust.

It was appropriate that two Watford FC legends, both past players of the season, former goal keeper Alec Chamberlain and defender Steve Palmer, were among those to tackle the picturesque, inspiring and challenging parkland course.

Unusually in this summer of unpredictable weather the waterproofs remained safely stashed in the golf bags for the majority of the day. And, at the end of an enjoyable 18 holes, the 32 golfers from SA Law and a number of local businesses enjoyed retired to the 19th for dinner and to console and congratulate each other about the wayward drives, the gimmes that were missed, and the rare flashes of Rory McIlroy-esque brilliance.

Among those in celebratory mood were Tim Sheridan, Rob Ryall, Simon Speller, Chris Cook, Adam Harris and Richard Malone who defied all probabilities to “beat the Porters Park pro”.

Sheridan also picked up the gong for nearest the pin while Richard Horner won the plaudits for gunning the day’s longest drive.

The best individual score-cards were turned in by Keith Watson and Adam Ginder while the best four consisted of Ginder again and his team-mates Rob Ryall, Peter Maestas and Neil Templeton.

SA Law has been supporting Watford FC, both on and off the pitch, for many years, particularly as the club’s sole official legal partner, so it was obvious that the club’s charitable arm should benefit from this golf day.

Community Director Rob Smith explained how the tireless efforts of the Trust makes a difference to the lives of those who benefit from the projects and schemes the trust runs in the community.

We were honoured to be joined by Anthony Burton, a young man who kindly explained how the trust helped him through the loss of family members and helped him to develop his confidence and employability skills to secure a career in retail.

Speaking about the Trust, Anthony said, “Without the Trust I simply wouldn’t be here today. The work they do is so important and being involved with the Watford FC Trust really is like being part of a big family.”

The Sports Education Trust is a registered charity running community sports and educational activities.

The Trust employs 21 full time and more than 50 part-time staff running programmes throughout Hertfordshire and in the London Boroughs of Harrow and Hillingdon, currently focusing on five key themes: sports participation, social inclusion, health, education and community facilities.
