Acas publish free guidance on how to conduct workplace investigations

Unfortunately, problems in the workplace are inevitable.

Whilst many issues will be best dealt with in an informal manner, employers will sometimes need to consider taking more formal action. Workplace investigations form a crucial part of this process.

A properly conducted investigation may reveal facts which resolve the problem there and then, meaning that no further action is required. Investigations are equally important where further action is required. If an employer fails to carry out a proper investigation in respect of a potential disciplinary matter against an employee, there is a real risk that any subsequent dismissal will be considered unfair by an employment tribunal.

Acas has recently published guidance to assist employers with conducting workplace investigations, “Conducting workplace investigations” can be accessed here.
