HR Stories in the News - Gender Equality

In this edition of The Employment Source, we have gathered HR stories in the news which relate to gender equality.

This is an area which has grown in both popularity and exposure over recent years and has continued to develop further with the introduction of the gender pay gap reporting legislation. We have picked a few helpful articles to share with you and summarise them for ease below:

  1. Gender pay gap reporting

    Following the introduction of the gender pay gap reporting obligations, this article provides five helpful answers to common questions from HR professionals about their reporting duties.

    In a nutshell, it explains that the new legislation applies to private and voluntary sector employers with 250 or more employees and goes on to detail what the obligations are.

    The article explains the information required for the report, the employees you are legally required to report on and how to publish the gender pay gap information. Given that the results must be posted in a publicly accessible manner by 4 April 2018, this is a nice introductory guide to the gender pay gap reporting requirements.

  2.  Writing a gender pay gap report: A guide for employers

    As outlined above, larger companies are required to publish their gender pay gap report on their websites by 4 April 2018. The organisations have 12 months from the ‘snapshot date’ (5 April 2017) to comply with the new regulation.

    This article summarises what the organisations have to consider in writing their report. It suggests that employers should start by introducing their gender pay gap report by stating their obligations under the legislation; highlight the six metrics required, focusing on the underlying causes of a gender pay gap and explaining the company result in comparison to organisations in the same sector, or the wider economy, and finally use the opportunity to set out any actions they are taking or will take to address its gender pay gap.

  3. UK companies disclose huge gender pay gaps

    Ahead of the new law, this article shares early reports from some British companies who have shared their findings in relation to the gender pay gap. According to the article, Virgin Money disclosed that on average their male employees earn 36 per cent more than their female employees while PwC confirmed a 15 per cent difference in pay. It is an interesting read as not only does it highlight some stark differences in the pay received by men as compared to women, it also seeks to explain some of the reasons behind the differences, and suggests some additional steps that need to be addressed before gender inequality can really be eradicated.

  4.  Gender pay gaps and the Met Police chief’s decision to take a “pay cut”

    As the title suggests, this article discusses the new Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s decision to take a lower salary than that of her predecessor, although it adds an interesting twist to the story by speculating that this move may actually reinforce the stereotypes of gender pay inequality. Whilst the article acknowledges some factors may impact the gender pay gap (such as the fact that female employees are typically concentrated in lower job roles, work part time or have taken maternity leave) it makes an interesting observation in respect of MC Cressida Dick’s decision to take a pay cut.

    The article explains that the Met Police had, in a previous report, cited that a key factor that impacted their pay gap was that more male than female police officers stayed on to progress in the force and notes that MC Cressida Dick is the first woman in charge of the force in its 188 year history. Against this backdrop they argue that her decision may actually undermine the gender equality, as amongst other matters, it can reinforce female stereotypes that women are less assertive about asking for a pay increase than men.

    Chris explains exactly what needs to be published, who the reporting will affect and why it has been introduced. He explains why employers should be aware of the risks of the reporting obligations and also what employers need to start doing now.
